A CHESS REVIVAL.
A pronounced revival is being experienced locally in the game of chess. Masterton now boasts two chess clubs, more or bss public, while the game is also having a distinct "run" in club and social circles. In its way this is rather a matter for congratulation, as chess is admittedly one of the most studious and therefore most valuable games of its kind we have. Ping-pong has had its day, bridge has almost ha.l it 3 too, but chess perplexing, fascinating, stimulating chesa —will no doubt go on, one may say, for ever. It sta ids unique among brain r astime.i .in call ■■ ing for an elasticity of intellect and power of mental assimilation and calculation which rrake its votaries usually keen of perception in all things, and while supplying to the full the healthy sport of fricn lly competition it has not associated hi any way with it the taint of gamhling so frequently robbing otherwise excellent gamts of their virtues. Telegraphic chess matches are enlarging the local fraternity of the board, and generally speaking there is quite a commendable amount of interest being displayed in a grand old game.
