RACINGWELLINGTON RACES, BT TELEGRAPH —X'EB PRES3 ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON. July 18. There was wretched weather for the opening day of the winter meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, a cold southerly gale blowing, while rain fell all day. The attendance was poor, and speculation was limited. The sum of £7,758 was put through the totalisator, as compared with £15,308 last year. Results: — Stewards Handicap.—Martryium, 1; Golden Gate, 2; Aboriginal, 3. Also ran—lrish Rifle, Lady Disdain, Immolation, Landwern, Kurawaka, Wharekura and Duart. Martryium was one of the first away, and in the straight drew away and won by three lengths. Time, 1 min 38 3-5 sec. Miramar Hack Handicap.—California, 1; Vasa, 2; Skye, 3. Other starters Ranghaeta, Sandstream, Monkey Puzzle, Spinning Flight, Blue Ribbon, Truthful and Glentui. Won easily by six lengths. Time, lmin 37 4-ss?c.

First Hack Hurdles. —Defeat, 1; Top Rose, 2; Lingerer, 3. Also ran —Ghoorka, Full Cry, Pierre, Strathcona, Hatley, Cyrus, Sherlock Holmes, Concussion and Otaroa. This was a good race. Otaroa and Top Roie led to the turn, where Defeat joined in and a punishing finish saw the latter gain the verdict by a bare length. Time, 3min 35sec. Parliamentary Handicap.— Sir Frisco, 1; Seaman, 2; Dawn, 3. Also ran —Mystification, Truce, Wailethe, Paragon, Swimming Belt, Rangipapa, Merrie Zealand, Maharanuj. Comedian, Silken Rein and Mussell. Sir Frisco and Dawn were the quickest away and led to the turn, where Seaman ran up and Dawn began to falter. Sir Frisco and Seaman drew right away from the field, and the former won by two lengths. The third horse was about six lengths away. Time, lmin 52sec. Winter Hurdles. —Compass, 1; Scotty, 2; Snip, 3. Also ran— Shrapnel, L'xmoor, Sen Sim, Ability, Loch Fyne, Whatakura and St. Amelia. Scotty and Sen Sim led for a time, but on passing the stand there was ilttle to choose between the field. Scotty and Compass raced in frxnt all along the back, but in the straight Compass drew out and won by three or four lengths. Time, 4 min 4 3-ssec. Trial Plate.—Effort, 1; Landwern, 2; Passive, 3. Also ran —Campfir. 1 , Grand Myrella, Flint Gun, Vinco, Consuelo, Roosevelt, Remission, Ennuis. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 26 l-ssec. Te Aro Hack Handicap.— Pronun, 1; Naumai, 2; Silkweb, 3. Also ran—North Pole, Tumut, Yosami, Lochiela, Cavatina. Won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 8 l-ssec.
