THE LABOUR MARKET.

The Journal of the Department of Labour for July contains the following concerning Masterton, Tinui and Greytown:— TINUI. Building trades: All local carpenters have been fairly employed. Retail trade: A fair trade has been doing in all branches. Miscellaneous: Blacksmiths have been doing a fair trade. Unskilled labour: All local men have been fairly employed during the month at scrub-cutting, ploughing, fencing, dam-making, quarrying atone for and at roadwork. Several swaggers passed through here during the month, most of them being young and able-bodied men, but only a few of them got employment in this district at scrubcutting and quarrying stone. There is no demand for outside labour at the present time.

MASTERTON. During the month there has been a slackening-off in the building trades, and prospects of improvement in the immediate future are not bright. Building tiades: Slack in all branches. > I'iumbers and tinsmiths: All hands miking full time. General blacksmithing : Only medium. (Engineering: Dull. Moulding: Fair. Boot trade: Busy in repairs only. Tailoring: Very good. Furniture trade: Fair business repsrted. Saddlery: Somewhat dull. Dressmaking and millinery: Good business has been done, with prospects of continuance. The majority ot drapers are holding winter sales, and fair business is reported. Goachbuilding and painting: Only normal. Unskilled labour: There is still very little demand for this class of labour. One married man, with two dependants., and one single man, were placed in private employment. GREYTOWN. Building trades: Very slack. Engineering trades: Very slack. Tailoring trade: Fairly busy. Retail trade (general): Fairly busy. Unskilled labour: There is very little doing for this class of worker. Local men are not fully employed. The weather for the past few weeks h»s been against outside labour, and employers are not employing as much labuu*" as i 3 usual at this time of the year.'
