SPORTING.

RACING. TURF NOTES,

(By "Zetland"). After being spelled for a few days Letherin was worked on the track J again on Wednesday. The soreness evident last week was cau&ed by the horse striking himself. The Kilcheran filly in J. Cress' stable is improving very fast, and promises to turnish into a splendid type of a thoroughbred. With San Julie,Thern, Gaelic, Campaign and the Kilcheran filly, the stable should provide one of the best district teams next season This district wili be well represented at Trentham to-morrow and next week. The list will include Aboriginal, Merrie Zealand, Flue Ribbon, Skye, j Strathcona, Sherlock Holmes, Silken Rein, Sen Sim, Tumut, Conquer and Lochieta. As some of these act well in heavy going, at least a portion of stake money should come to Wairarapa. The half-brother to Silken Rein has been named Golden Rein. He is b 'ing trained by H. Fletcher, and has grown into a fine big colt. > Several Wellington "sports" are reported to have scored exceptionally good wins over the' success of Balgonie in the Ascot Thousand Pony Race. The horses now in work at Tauhereiikau include Kelso, Merrivonia, Ferryman, Swallow, Strathcona and Sen Sim.

J. Ayers has taken in hand the Lakeshell-fuhirangi colt owned by Mr B. Speedy He is a fine upstanding animal, and one that should soon get on the winning list. St. Michael, winner of the Auckland and Wellington Cups, was sold last week in Christchurch for the modest sum of £5 10s. The Wellington Winter Meeting will open at Trentham to-morrow, and there is every probability of splendid sport being provided. 'I he acceptances form a fine average, and include quite a number of leading psrformers. In the Stewards' Handicap, of seven furlongs, the field will include such capable performers over the distance as Jrish Rifle, Martyrium, Aboriginal, The Seer, Kurawaka and Merrie Zealand, ""he Parliamentary Handicap is expected to bring about fourteen contestants to the post, and a splendid race should result if such as Mystification, Truce, Irish Rifle, Dawn, Sir Frisco and Seaman are among the starters. Among the bottom weights there are several that may fight out a good finish, and the race is a decidedly open one. The Winter Hurdles will be contested by some of the best hurdlers in the country. Shrapnel, Lady Hune, Exmoor, Sen Sim, Le Beau, ProaDector, Scotty, Compass and Whatakura are all good performers, and if the majority are sent out in earnest for the stake those present will be treated to a very fine race.

HOCKEY. MAJOR CUP. KNOX v. CARTERTON B. A match was palyed at Lansdowne yesterday pfternoon between the Knox and Carterton B teams. In the first spell Knox played with the sun at their backs and kept Carterton cbntinually on the defensive. It was but occasionally that Carterton got near the Knox goal. The latter team scored five goals in this spell, while Carterton were unable to score. Loader (2), Ibbetson (2) and Dixon hit the goals. Carterton commenced the second spell by springing a "surprise" on the home team, Major scoring a goal before Knox realised that the spell had commenced. Carterton then rallied and played better hockey than they did in the first spell. They kept Knox defending for some time. Good hitting by Lomas, Dixon, Loader and Hornblow sent Carterton back defending, and from a scramble, Loader hit a goal. Carterton then set up a determined attack on Knox goal, and their efforts were rewarded by Major scoring a goal for them. Knox had the best of the remainder of the game, which ended in a win for Knox by 6 goals to 2. Mr M. Mcintosh was an excellent referee.

Richards and Hall were the mainstay of the A team, the latter clearing his circle by splendid hits at times when the B forwards were attacking strongly.
