GOLF.
AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP. Received July 13, 6.30 p.m. SYDNEY, July 13. The high class p'ay of Pearce (Tasmania), Duncan (New Zealand) and Soutar (New South Wales) was frequently applauded by the large crowd who witnessed the final rounds. Pearce had established a lead of seven strokes over Duncan on the first two rounds, but on the third round \broke down, leaving Duncan leading by three. Soutar had been gradually lessening the distance till he had a deficit of five to make up. Piarce, however, came away in the final round, and equalled his score of 75, put up in each of the first two rounds, and gained the championship. Soutar throughout played wonderfully steady. Duncan had an experience similar to Pearce in the afternoon, and could not do better than 85. Thus he had two capital rounds of 76, a moderate 81, and an 85. A little more practice would have made a difference, for evidently he required more time to learn the course.
The Featherston Golf Club defeated Greytown Golf Club on Saturday by eight games to nil.
