LATE GOLF.
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP OF
AUSTRALIA

The opening rounds of the Amateur Golf Championship of 36 holes commenced to day. The play attracted a large gathering and provided so ne excellent contests. There were eight competitors— Scott (Victoria), the present holder, G. Pearce (Tasmania), O'Brien (Amateur Champion of New South Wales), K. Duncan (New Zealand), J. Came Bidwill <New Zealand), Hyland (South Australia), Simpson (New South Wales), and Christie (New South Wales). The greatest interest was centred in the fight bptween Scott and Duncan At the end of the morning round Scott lnd by three up. A hard fought round in the afternoon resulted in Scott beating Duncan by one at the 37tb hole.
Bidwill lead Simpson by one up on the morning's play, and ended by beating him, 3 up and 2 to play. Pearce, plaviny. sterling golf, disposed of Hyland by 10 up and 2 to Play. Christie beat O'Brien by 4 up and 3 to play. The semi-finals will take place tomorrow. Bidwill meets Christie.
Received July 14, 1.16 a.m. SYDNEY, July 13. In the Scott-Duncan contest there was some brilliant play and a most exciting finish. Scott was seven up at the 13th hole. He lost the next by a stroke, and the 15th was squared in five. Duncan won the 16th. Scott had the misfortune to tread on Duncan's oall and lost the 17th hole. Duncan won the 18th, Scott leading at the end of the round by three up. Starting the second round with three down, Duncan won the 4th and 6th holes, the others being behalved. At the 13th hole Duncan was two up with four to play. Scott missed the next nole. Duncan, playing beautifully, looked like winning, but Scott again squared at 15th, taking four and five to Duncan's five and six. The tremendous strain was telling upon the New Zealanddr, who was now playing with less confidence. The 17th hole halved, At the last hole, Duncan, by brilliant play, again squared the game amid great cheering. Another hole had to be played to enable Scott to win what is described as the stiffest match ever played. In the Bidwill-Simpson match, the latter won tho first six holes, but Bidwill, oy line steady play, gradually wora his opponent down.
