The Masterton Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association's ninth annual Show opened in the Drill Hall yesterday, with a catalogue of entries totalling over three hundred—a few more than last year's number. The exhibition is on the whole very creditable. There is, of course, the usual lack of entries in some classes, while others are very well filled, a fair average, however, being maintained. Birds are entered from all parts of the Dominion, from as far south as Christchurch, and from distant parts of the North Island. The orficials of the Association worked assiduously all day receiving exhibits, and arranging them in trtir proper places, auu the judges were able to proceed wi*:h their work without deli/, the whijle Show being judged by early in the afternoon. Taken all through, the quality of the birds shown is considered to be vt a very good standard. Local authorities, at least, are satisfied, while the judges' comments were not unfavourable. Two championships were set apart by the North Island Association for competition at the Show, one in thd Game variety of poultry, and the other in the pigeon classes. The champion game bird was shown by Mr N. Oldham, of Marton, and the champion pigeon was awarded to a dragoon blue exhibited by Messrs Gardiner and Son, Wellington Conversing with an Age reporter, the judge of the poultry section (Mr Doig, of Wellington), remarked that the champion bird in his ssction, a modern game hen, was a very fair bird, of moderate type. He considered that the Silver Wyandotte .section was the strongest in the poultry exhibits, the prize birds being well laced, of good quality, and typical of the breed. The winning hen was a very nice bird, which would compete strongly at any Show. The winning cock was a little behind in point of general merit. He thought Minorcas were about second to the Silver Wyandottes as far as general quality went, the quality being very fair. Indian Runner ducks particularly pleased him, and ha considered they were a distinct credit to their exhibitors. Mr J. F. Fitzgerald, judge of the pigeons, was pleased with his section, and commended the Society's zeal in adhering to its pigeon classes, seeing that other Societies had dropped them. He was glad to see that the entries were yearly increasing, and the' quality was being more than maintained. The dragoons were a good lot, in fact, one of the best brought together in the Island for some time. The champion was not quite as short in the face as he would have liked, and was a trifle short in the feather. The show of working homers satisfied him well, except that the birds were not in good show condition. A good red tumbler of excellent colour was shown by Mr Craig.of Christchurch. He would have been pleased to see more fantails and magpies, seeing that at Carterton the former, and at Wellington the latter birds are bred in numbers. The attendance at the Show last night was good, considering the dampness underfoot, and to-day should see the public accord hearty support to the Association. The secretary (Mr G. Hyde) is being ably assisted by Mr T. W. Barnes and a strong committee in bis work, and the arrangements are perfect. The following is the full prize list: — Langshans.—Black hen, H.
