TURI? NOTES

(By "Zetland.") Mystification, who is top weight among the acceptors for the Parliamentary Handicap at the Wellington meeting, is reported to be moving scratchily in his work. After doing a good gallop at Opaki, early this week, Letherin ■went sore, the seat of thfl trouble being the fetlock joint previously injured. The Lethe gelding has not been accepted for at the Wellington meeting, but may be got right for later racing. Letherin's withdrawal at the present time is unfortunate for his owner, Mr J. O'Meara, as the horse was expected to run very prominently at Trenthnm next week. The highly bred Gazeley ha 3 been turned out for a spell. He has run disappointingly of late, and as he does not like hard tracks may not be put into work again. H. Fletcher is working Silken Rein and her half-brother by Merrie England on the Greytown course. The firat-namerl is engaged in the Parliamentary Handicap next week. Her chance in this race would have been brighter if she could have been given a couple of races in public in order to sharpen her up. T. C. White, of Blenheim, expects t) return to Wairarapa shortly, and will probably start a training stable at Clartvilh'.

Mahuta, who has furnished into a fine commanding stamp of a thoroughbred, is being trained at Crofton, near Marton. He is to be prepared for the New Zealand Cup, and will probably be raced at the Marton and Rangitikei meetings in the early spring. Very little track work has been done at Opaki for some days. This week a number of horses have been given road exercise only- The local candidates engaged at Trentham next week will now need to be brushed along in their work, otherwise on the first day they may be short of a gallop or two. The purchase of the well-known stallion, Conqueror, recently aifected by Mr McCulloch, of Masterton, will provf? a great acquisition to this district. As sire of those good horses Chivalry, Motoa, Ability, Naumai, Waipaku and Toa Tuhi, the Medallion—Siesta stallion has made a name for himself, r,n:l is sure to be liberally patronised by breeders. Sir Artegal is wintering nicely. He is being given plenty of trotting exercise, and is looking big and muscular. Ihe New Zealand bred and owned pony,Balgorie, winner of the Ascot Thousand in Australia, on Wednesday, won the principal event at the Wellington Pony Meeting at Easter. His form there led his party to take the Phoebus Appollo pony to the other side for Wren's thousand pounder. The good thing duly came off, and the owners scored a big win.
