WORKS AND FINANCE COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Works and I Finance Committee of the Masterton | Borough Council was held on Tuesday, June 30th.. There were present the Mayor (Mr P. L. Hollings), Crs Elliott, Ewington, Haughey, Hunter, Morris, Pauling, Pragnell, Prentice and Yarr. The Acting-Town Clerk and Borough Engineer reported, inter alia, as follows in connection with various works : Footpath, Macara Street.—l advise seeing there are houses on one side only, and the soil of the road is in its virgin state; that the requirements of the residents will be met by the provision of six chains of gravel path sft wide, i.e., nurface formed and coated with some 3in of river sand. Footpath, Michael Street, south side.—My instructions ■on this matter were not quite clear, seeing that the street i« many chains in length, but I presume what is wanted is a footpath from the intersection of Chapel Street down to the premises in the occu-—-TWftion of Mr Aronsteh. There, also, I recommend the formation of a gravel footpath some 5J chains in langcn 9ft wide. It it is desired to provHe further footpath accommodation along this street, I would suggest that the present beaten track be gravelled. Kuripuni Triangle, tast side.—ln this case the footpath appears to be in reasonably good or lar, as it was only quite recently that the surface was chipped and coated where necessary. It is now in compact order. Essex Street, east side.—Both sides of this street appear to be in" a similar rough condition. I think, that some slight relief might be given to the residents by regulation of the surface and removing the larger stones which have come through from the under surface in consequence of want of ' sufficient consolidation when or subsequent to the original formation of the footpath. William Street Footpath Extension.—The extension of this footpath I take it is intended to mean concrete kerb graded into kerb to be fixed at some future date in Dixon Street, so as to produce uniformity. This will neceisitute some J2 to 18in of filling for some 2.69 chains. Cole Street Footpath, opposite Beetham's.—The palh in this case is unformed, and I think the relief sought would be met until some permanent path is. provided, by removing the top soil, regelating and caatittg with river gravel, the cost of which I put at £4. The length required to be treated is 7.64 chains. Top end of Dixon Street.—lf a sft river gravel path be providsd to the intersection of Princes Street, 19J chains, some relief will be afforded the residents until such time as permanent paths are constructed. It was resolved:—(l) Macara Street.—That the be authorised (2) Michael, Street.-That a gravel footpath be made down to the Creek. (3) Kuripuni Triangle, east side.—That this matter be, referred back for further report on the cost of kerbing,' channelling and forming the gravel footpath. (4) Essex Street, east side.—That the work be gone on with. (5) William Street. —That the matter stand over. (6) Cole Street.—That the work having been commenced, the action of the Borough Engineer be approved. (7) Diftjhi Street.—That the work be aunroriaed.' It was resolved that all drain- 1 layers and plumbers be informed that in future they will be required to reinstite all highway openings in accordance with the by-laws. It was resolved that the Council ( subscribe to the Association for the | year ending June 30th, 1909. j The Committee adjourned until 1 the following evening. At the adjourned meeting there were present Crs Morris (chairman), Ewington,'Haughey, Hunter, Pragnell, Prentice and Yarr. A letter was submitted from the Department of Roadß intimating that the Minister regrets his inability to recommend the Governor's approval of the resolution of the Borough Council of the 14th April last,,; pray-, ing for the exemption of Perry Street, between Quean Street and Chapel Street, from the provisions of section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1906.-. The application of the f-ecretary of the Masterton Technical School for a grant in aid of the cost of lighting and heating was resubmitted.—lt was resolved that the sum of £25 be handed over. t Various other mr.tter» were dealt with.
