TOPICAL READING.

THE N3GLECT OP PHYSICAL CULTURE.

A year or two ago citizens of Masterton were wont to regard with pride two flourishing institutions of the town, as indicative of our progressive spirit, apart from ordinary business advancement. These institutions were the Gymnasium and Physical Training School zind the Boxing Association, both of which are now non-existent. It is not as if these bodies lacked public .sympathy, as they were loyally supported'on all sides to the extent that two spacious buildings were erected for their respective uses. The buildings now stand as monuments of public apathy in Masterton. For fine, healthy, bodily development the benefits of gymnastics and boxing cannot be overestimated, and it is greatly to be regretted that these forms of exercises have ceased to find public favor in Masterton, Numerous counter attractions and amusements have probably bean the downfall of the institutions referred to, but there is a time for everything-, and physical development should find a place in the routine of the life of every community. It is to be hoped that a determined effort will be made next winter to restart both the institutions.
