ALLEGED LIBEL.
CHARGES AGAINST SIEVIER. Received June 30, 10.15 p.m. LONDON, June 30. The hearing of the charge against Robert Sievier, was commenced at Bow Street, yesterday. According to the evidence it appears that since the newspaper "Winning Post" has been started, Sievier had almost a weekly attack made upon J. B. Joel, and his family. Recently Sievier, being short of money, approached Joel for a ban, finally promising to abstain from publishing further alleged defamatory matter if given £5,000. Joel offered £2,500 on condition that Sievier gave him a written promise, This the latter refused, and demanded another £5,000 under thraat to publish some incidents in Joel's lite. The case was remanded. Bail was refused.
A cablegram from London, published yesterday, stated that Robert Sievier, was arrested during the progress of the racing at Sandown Park, and was taken to Bow Street Police Court, on an information laid by J. B. Joel. Ir. is understood the arrest was made owing to the persistent publication of alleged libels in the sporting paper the "Winning Post." The warrant charges Sievier with making threats to publish defamatory matter concerning Joel, for the purpose of extorting £5,000.
