THE RABBIT PEST.
The rabbit pest promises to be as serious a problem in certain parts of Hawke's Bay in the future a" it was in the Wairarapa some years ago. The question was touched upon by Mr L. H. Hardy at the annual meeting of the Hawke's Bay A. and P. Association last week, when he stated that the low prices for produce now ruling had caused farmers to curtail expense and to neglect the necessary precautionary measures against rabbits. He spoke strongly against such a penny wise and pound foolish policy, maintaining that neglect at the present time would mean very serious consequences at no distant date. Other speakers attributed the increase to the fact that the natives took no active steps against the rabbits on their holdings, whilst on Government land in the vicinity of Taupo the pest was reported to be increasing rapidly.
