LITHGOW IRONWORKS
A cablegram this morning states that the Li'hgow ironworkers have refused to accept the reduction in wages proposed by the proprietors of the Lithgow Ironworks. The nonpassing of the Iron Bonus Bill (New South Wales) placed the Lithgow Ironworks in a critical position. The firm first asked the employees to accept a reduction in wages ranging from 5 to 12* per cent, till the hill is reintroduced jn September, but the men refused to accept the reduction. The proprietors then modified their proposals, and suggested tha 1 , the amount deducted from wages shculd be held by the firm till September, when, if the Bonu3 Bill be passed, the money would be refunded. If the bill should.not be passed, the firm would then retain the money and again confer with the men on the question of wages. The men have refused to accept this proposal, and it is probable that the works will now ; be closed until September next.
