WATER IN WOOL.
PATENT DETECTING POWDER. NAPIER, June 14. In view of the outbreaka of fire in wool ships it will be of interest to sheepfarmers and all concerned in the wool business to learn that Mr J. B. E. Hird, of the Tomoana freezing works, has evolved a powder which instantly detects the presence of water in wool. The powder alluded to places it in the power of anybody t) decide as to the condition of wool because the moment it is brought in contact with the wet fleece the wool turns a deep magenta colour, and becomes clotted whilst if grease only is present no change at all takes place. Mr Hird gave a demonstration of his patent, and showed that if there was only moiiture to a slight extent a slight mapenta tinge was sh'vwn without clotting, but whin the moisture reached a dangerous stage clotting and deep colouring took place.
