THE AMERICAN FLEET.
Received June 11, 12.55 a.m. FREMANTLE, June 10. News by thj mail states that Admiral Evans, in the course of his remarks at the farewell dinner prior to the fleet leaving San Francisco, said:—"lf you ask me why the fleet is being sent to the Pacific I can only say I was told to bring it here. When I was about to start I was assured by President Roosevelt and the Secretary for the Navy that it was purely a peace cruise, but I must be pn- pared to fight if necessary." HOW BRITISH WARSHIPS WILL BE DISPOSED. LACROSSE MATCHES. AUCKLAND, June 10. The warships in port on the occasion of the visit of the American fleet will be disposed in twu lines, the innar line having three British vessels in the centre and four American vessels at each ond. The second line would consist f eight American vessels. There are three teams of lacrosse players on the American fleet. The Auckland Lacrosse Association has approached the Entertainment Committee with a view to arranging a game between the fleet representatives and representatives of Aucl.land or a Dominion team.
