VEGETABLE-GROWING BY PRISONERS.
The Premier's proposal *:o establish market gardens in connection with gaols is stoutly opposed by the Auckland Market Gardeners' Association, which is entirely in the right in the view that it takes. Marketgardening may be a very "nice occupation" for burglars, but that is scarcely the point. We believe in prisoners being taught trades and generally informed as much as possible during the period of their detention. In fact their treatment
should not only be humane, but should tend as much as possible to strengthen them morally, mentally and even physically in some cases. Market-gardening is now largely in the hands of the Chinese, but we trust that John will not stay with us for ever. Even if the Chinese do continue for some time in the land there is no reason why ' market-gar-dening should not become a valuable industry in the hands of the white man. Prison labour should not come into conflict with those who earn an honest living. It is bad enough having to pay for the up-keep of the gaols without turning the inmates into competitors against our industry.
