MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

; ORDINARY MEETING. The Masterton Borough Cctomcil met last evening. Present-- His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. L. HolliKgs), CrsJ. H." Pauling, J. Elliott, J. Hunter, A. Haughey, W. Morris, J. C. Ewington and J. Yarr.. Leave of absence was granted to Crs J. Prentice and W. Pragnell. Cr Ewington, when the minutes of the Works Committee were read, complained that a minute contained therein, in reference to him having onposed the Engineer's recommendation that the steam roller ba not put on Essex, Pownall and Cole streets, was not a correct account of what had taken place at the meeting. Cr i Ewington said that what he had moved was that the ruts in the road be filled in and the road generally trimmed up. He said the publication of the erroneous report was detrimental to him as a Councillor, and he moved that the proper motion be substituted; The Acting-Town Clerk said he took a record of the proceedings, and he asked Cr Ewington where he could have got such a minute as that read unless it had occurred. Cr Ewington persisted that his motion was wrongly reported, and after some further remarks the minute was corrected as moved by Cr Ewington. The minutes were then confirmed. Tenders were opened for the carting uf broken metal from Fernridge and the supply of boul.lei- lo r.e delivered at the Corporation yards. The tenders were referred to the Works Committee. Mr A. C. Morris wrote drawing attention to the badly lit state of Dixon Street South.—lt was resolved to inform Mr Morris that the matters referred to in his letter were being attended to. An application was received from the Masterton Municipal Band for an annual of £3o.—The request was referred to the Finance Committee to be discussed when the estimates again came on. ' Mr H. A. Whelch applied for the right to take about fourteen loads of soil from the Park Lake. The matter wa3 referred to the Park Comi mittee, with power to act. A letter was received from Mr H. Cole, in which the writer complained that he was subjected to serious inconvenience and loss through the gasworks yard 3 being closed wiipn his drays arrived with coal recently, and asking the Council to remunerate him for the loss. —The matter was referred to the Gas Committee. Mr P. McMahon wrote to the Council applying for the position as Ranger, which position he understood would be vacant shortly. The Mayor said it was time to deal with such an application when the anticipated vacancy occurred. The letter was "received." Messrs Taylor and Hodges, contractors for the new Public School at Lansdowne, applied for an extraordinary temporary water service from the Corporation waterworks to the new Public School site at Lansdowne.—The application was granted subject to the consent of the Hospital authorities, and on the payment of 4d per 1,000 cubic feet for the water, to be measured by meter. Crs Ewington and Yarr and the Mayor were appointed a committee to deal with the question of the releasing or otherwise of tha Temperance Hotel, next to the Drill Hall. The Acting Engineer was instructed to see to th* l roadway in j Hogg Crescent, also to fill up a dangerous hole in Church Street ' roadway. He was also instructed to report on the liability or otherwise of the Council in regard to repairing the footpath opposite Holloway's Buildings. Oh the recommendation of a Select Committee, the Council decided to accept dedication of Wright and Tararua Street-, in the Yates' estate, subject to the payment by the syndicate of the cost of the sewerage thereof, as estimated by the Borough Engineer, and subject to a deed of dedication for execution under the common seal of the Borough Council in terms to the approval of the Acting Town Clerk.
