HAWKE'S BAY PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE. BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. NAPIER, June 9. The Hawke's Bay Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union was held at Hastings to-night. There was a small The Hastings and Takapau branches were represented. Mr H. M. Sanders (chairman), in a short opening address, said that he thought that the shearers award would be the cause of farmers "squeaking" before very long, and he saw no reason why the question of pay for farm labourers :ould not be settled in the same manner as that of the shearers. Mr H. M, Sanders was re-elected president. ' Mr J. Beatson was elected delegate to the Colonial Conference. Amongst the remits carried were the following:—"That the Government be urged to settle the native land difficulty by applying the principle of the Land for Settlement Act to all unimproved native land, but to exercise a proper and philanthropic finance by paying interest only on the proceeds"; "That the Provincial Executive act as an election committee at the forthcoming election, and witn the assistance of the branch committees select from persons nominated as candidates for Hawke's Bay constituencies, candidates favourable to the platform of the Union, members to be advised to vote for and make every effort to secure the return of candidates so selected"; "That the Colonial Executive be requested to urge the Government in future to allow applicants for land all the options of the tenure provided in the Lands for Settlements Act, whether ordinary Crown lands or land resumed for settlement purposes."
