The Department of Industries and * Ccmjnerce has received the following •cabfe from the High Commissioner, .•■dated London, June (sth, 1908: — The mutton market i 9 weak, an d there is very little .business doing. Prices are nominal, except for lightweight Canterbury brands, for which there is great competition. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 4Jd; North Island at 3Jd per lb. The lamb market is very firm, and there is a good demand for all biands. Canterbury lamb is quoted and other than Canterbury at s£cl per \b. A small shipment of lambs has -arrived from PunJa Arenas. ,Tho beef market is very dull, the weather lately having been unfavourable for sale. Hindquarters are quoted at 3id, and forequarters at 23d per lb. The butter market is quiet, but steady, and there is a v°ry limited supply of colonial butter. Choicest b New Zealand is quoted at 109s; Dan-I v ish, Ills; Siberian, 101s per cwt. The cheese market is lifeless, and there is no change in prices to report. The hemp market is steady, with more demand. The following are the current quotations: Good fair grade, on spot, £26 10s; fair grade, on spot, £24 10s; fair current Manila, on spot, £24 10s; June and July shipments, good fair grade, £26 10s; fair grade, £24 IPs; fair current Manila, £24 15s. Stock held in 'Jjpndon consists of 702 tons. Tffe cocksfoot market is very firm, and there is no pressure to sell. Few enquiries are being made by speculative buyers. Shipments from River Plate during the month of May were as follows: Mutton-London, 92,299; Liverpool, 120,847; Hull, 1,822; Cardiff, 10,933; Southampton, 4,154; Plymouth, 1,170; Ireland, 3,734. Lamb —London, fi,375: Liverpool. 5,651; Hull, 381; Cardiff, 825; Southampton, 598; Plymouth, 34G; I; eland, 100. Butter—2,B42 cwt.
