RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS.
BT Tr^GHAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON, June 8. The first allocation of the research scholarships to be granted annually by the Government has been made. Four senchrship- are nvailabie annually, one for each University, bilt as there ware no applications from the Auckland students, the Auckland Research Scholarship Board has made no nomination.
Representatives of the other cen trei who have been awarded the scholarship are as follows:—Miss Clara M. Taylor, Victoria College, Wellington; Norman B. Bell 8.A., Canterbury College; Alexander Gordon Mac Donald, Bachelor of Mining Engineering, Otago University. The subject forreseac;h selected by Miss Taylor, who in 1906 secured honours in organic chemistry, is the fat industry. This relates to the manufacture of soap and candles, and is regarded as a subject likely to produce important commercial results if the investigations meet with any degree of success. The ironsands of New Zealand has be#n selected for special scientific examination and inquh'y by Mr Bell, Whi'le the Otago student's work will be 2 an investigation of the brown icoafeof that province in relation to 'their'geological occurrence, chemical aiftl physical characters, mining and niai'ket condition, and present usas and economic possibilities. A special board will supervise the work of each student, and the scholarship may be extended to three years on the Board's recommendation approved by the Minister.
