A GALLANT STOKER.
THE EXPLOSION ON THE TENNESSEE. NARROW ESCAPE OF AN ADMIRAL. Received June 8, 8.43 a.m. NEW YORK, June 7. In connection with the Bursting of a boiler-tube on the United States cruiser Tennessee, whereby four men were killed and ten injured, a stoker named Wood, a member of the crew of the Tennessee, made a gallant effort at rescue, but scaldir.g steam overcame him, and he succumbed. Rear-Admiral Sabree narrowly escaped. He left the stoke hole fifty seconds prior to the explosion. The accident is exciting peculiar interest, owing to an abortive trial in November, 1906, of the Shelby Tube Company on a charge of tricking the Government tube inspectors.
