SOLDIERS ILL-TREATED. SERGEANTS AND BOMBARDIERS SENTENCED. BERLIN, June 5. Four sergeants and four bombardiers were court-martialled at Berlin for ill-treating soldiers. There were 600 oases against Sergeant Tharnme, and forty against Sergeant Scliurz. One soldier committed suicide owing to Thamme's cruelty. Others were daily flegged, whipped, and belaboured with lists, straps and sticks. Recruits were compelled to run the gauntlet of soldiers armed with rods. Thamme was sentenced to fifteen months' imprisonment and reduction to the ranks, the others to terms not exceeding three < months' imprisonment.
