"EARNEST CONSIDERATION."
It is several months now since the Masterton Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution affirming the desirability for the erection of Government offices in Masterton, and memorialising the Government to that effect. The reply the Chamber received was that the matter would receive the "earnest consideration" of the departmental heads. Naturally, the Chamber did not expect to hear that their request was to be given "scant consideration," or even "no consideration." Still, "earnest consideration" is somewhat of a relief (in terms only) from the good old "steadily iri view" promise, an 1 that the terms are quite synonymous is shown by the fact that the authorities have observed the policy hitherto inseparably connected with the latter phrase. It is a good thing we all know from experience that the Government's "steadily in view" means "clean over the horizon and out of sight," otherwise we might be erroneously led to believe that a handsome three-storey brick, edifice was going to'be planted on some prominent site in the town, where a dozen widely scattered officials and their staffs were in future to be found instead of lost. A stranger from the country sought a certain Government Inspector on a recent date, and avers that he tramped two miles before he found the right one, and then he arrived almost back to his starting point. In these days of multitudinous inspectors, the public should be studied somewhat.
