BUSINESS PLACES DESTROYED ! BY FIRE. Received Jane 4, 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, June 4. A block of seven business places at Mullumbinby was destroyed by fire. The occupants of the bank had a narrow escape from losing their lives. FIRE ON A STEAMER. EXTINGUISHED PROMPTLY. Received June 4, 10.55 a.m. SYDNEY, June 4. It transpires that a fire occurred during the passage of the steamer indravelli from Wellington. It originated in the storeroom, and was extinguished promptly, without damage being done to the vessel. FEDERAL PENSIONS BILL. Received June 4. 11.8 a m. MELBOURNE, June 4. Mr Fisher, leader of th« Labour party, during a debate on old age pensions, said he did pot consider the measure introduced sufficiently liberal.

Received June 4, 11.21 p.m. MELBOURNE, June 4. The House passed the Old Age Pension Bill. The clauses providing that for five years prior to receiving a pension applicants must have led a temperate and reputable life, and that terms of imprisonment for criminal offences should be deducted in counting the period of residence, were struck out.
COASTAL HARBOURS DEFENCE SCHEME.
Received June 4, 11.8 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 4. The Labour Party has agreed to support Mr Deakin's proposal for a vote of a quarter of a million towards the coastal harbours defence scheme. The Surplus Revenue Bill has passed the Senate.
