WHAT RAILWAY SERVANTS WANT.
UT TELEGRAPH—I'KESS .'. S OVIiTION. AUCKLAND, June 1. Tha president and general secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Kailway Servants (Messrs A. VV. Veith and M. J. Mack, respectively) were entertained by the Auckland branch at a smoke concert on Saturday evening. Mr Veitch, in acknowledging the hearty welcome extended to the visitors, said that they had been instructed by the council to visit the various branches. Proposals which the council had in hand for general improvement in the conditions of the service were submitted to the Minister in January last, and were practically all refused. They requested another interview, aj in the first one they had not had time to put the whole of their requirements properly before the Minister, but they were met with a flat refusal. What the council now proposed was to plro their demands by circular among the members of Parliament of the different branches of the society. These demands included, among other things, a general increase in wages, owing to increased cost of living.; a universal forty-eight hours per week, as prevailed in other branches of industry; full civil and political rights; and better facilities for promotion from one grad<> to another. He submitted that all these things were theirs by right, and should be given.
