MT. LYELL RETURNS. Received May-,29, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 29. The Mount Lyell returns from 23rd April till 2Cth May (inclusive) show that 29,156 tons of ore were treated, also 210 tons of purchased ore. The converters produced 638 tons of blister copper containing—copper 630 tons, silver 47,619 ounces, gold 1,225 ounces. The shortage of blister copper was to an accident to the winding engine. REDUCTION IN PRICE OF BUTTER. Received May 29, 9.41 a.m. SYDNEY, May 29. A further reduction of four shillings a hundredweight has been made in the price of butter. A METEOR BURSTS. Received May ii 9, 10 a.m. SYDNEY, May 29. a large meteor at Leadville burst with a report like that of a heavy gun, the noise awakening many sleepers. NOT SIGNIFICANT. Received May 29, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 29. In the Federal House, the Prime Minister (Mr Deakin), referring to a cable stating that Germany intended to send a second cruiser to the South Seas, said he did not think there was anything significant in the fact. The work of preserving order amongst the widely-scattered islands had doubtless been found too great for one cruiser to satisfactorily accomplish. FEDERAL POST OFFICE. COMMISSION OF INQUIRY.' Received May 29, 10.40 a.m. MELBOURNE, May 29. In the Federal House, Mr Deakin, Prime Minister, announced that a Royal Commission would be appointed to enquire as to the condition of the Postal Department. The cause for complaints was extraordinary. There had been an exceptional increase in business last year, and an increased expenditure of over half a million. The vote this year hac 1 been increased by 18 per cent.
