THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. FRIDAY, MAY 20, 1908. ELECTION OF TRUST LANDS TRUSTEES.

Although there is reaßon for congratulation at the result of the poll held yesterday to elect three Trustees, from the seven candidates, to the Masterton Trust Lands Trust, it is not encouraging to find that the candidate who headed the poll, received no more than 495 votes when the votes on the roll total nearly three thousand. We do not suggest for a moment that if every voter on the roll had recorded his or her vote, aa the case may be, that the result would have been in any way different from what it was. We should, however, like to see greater interest displayed in Trust Lands Trust elec- (

tions. The town possesses a semiinvaluable possession in its Trust lands, and the administration of the Trust should be of intense interest to the people. It is worth remarking that the two candidates who stirred up some interest' in the election (viz)., Mess's 0. Pragnell and H. C. Robinson, scored a considerably larger number of votes than their opponents. We are nut surprised at the result, indeed it is very much what we anticipated it would be. Referring to the then approaching election, a few days ago, we observed that we should be surprised if all of the three candidates, who sought re-election, were returned, and expressed the opinion that Mr Pragnell would be one of the successful candidates. It is to be regretted that the exchange of sites question should have been so prominent in the contest. There are questions before the Trust of very much greater importance, and both Messrs Pragnell and Robinson took a broad view of the whole position. We are confident that the Trust Lands Trust will be a more "live" body in the future than it has been in the past, and that determined efforts will be made to develop on safe lines the town's valuable properties. When election time comes round again we hope to find several questions of genuine importance discussed, and a polling commensurate with the interest that the voters should take in the Trust's affairs.
