Dated at Masterton this 20th day of May, 11308. A. HATHAWAY, Returning Oflicer. TO THE VOTERS OF THE TRUST LANDS TRUST. L ADIES AND GENTLEMEN,— As a good deal of capital is being made out of the delay in respect of tho exchange of sites between tho Trust and the Government for the long-promised new Court-house, we think it only right to put matters plainly before you. In IUU2 an Acs was passed enabling tho exchange to bo made, and in describing the lands to be exchanged, no mention was made of any money paym-'M., nor was it expected that any payment ment would lie asked from either party. Wiou tho poll was taken, the exchange was agreed to by the voters on a level basis only. After long negotiations between some of the local bodies, tiie Trust, and the Government, die Minister of Justice demanded <£l,:i32 from tho Trust to equalise the values of the two sites, 'i'liis diuu was aftoivarda reduced to i; 1,000. Tho position now id t.iat oilicially there is no information from tho Minister to tho Trustees that he is prepared to givo an extra 7 or H feet, or that lie will let tlu .£1.,0J0 be paid in instalmen: s. As trustees of your property, andf in your interests, we objected to consider such an unousinesslike proposal, which might be repudiated at any time. Wo are, and always have ben in favour of a level exchange, but wo do not think that the funds of an educational institution like ours—one doing so much good in primary, secondary and technical education in tho Masterton district, and assisting the holders of scholarships from this district at Welli&fflton—should be mado use of by the Jif?tice Department to pay for a new Courthouse. Trusting that this will explain the position wo havo taken in the matter, and hoping to obtain your support at to-morrow's poll, We are, Yours faithfully, JOHN HESSEY. T. B. MICHEI.L. E. McEWEN.
