LONDON MARKETS.
—♦ Messrs Dalgety and Company, Limited, Wellington have received,-, the following cable messages from their, London house under date of the 21st instant: —Wool. —Sales continue firm and prices are rather higher especially for greasy medium and coarse crossbred and good merino combing wodls (free). The programme of sales will be shortened by 3 days cbsing on 29th May. Butter.—Market weak. The Copenhagen Official is 1 kroner (about Is l$cl) per cwt higher. The total imports of butter into the United Kingdom for week ending 16th instant amounted to 77,000 cwt as compared with 103,000 cwt for the corresponding week of 1907; showing a decrease of 20,000 cwt. Finest 104s. Owing to poor demandfor Australian it may be found necessary to place in cool stores. Frozen Meat.—There is a good demand for frozen lamb, but at unchanged prices. Frozen beef and mutton: Fair demand at unchanged prices. Rabbit Skins. —There are indications of an advance in prices. Tallow.—Since our last advices tallow is at par to 3d per cwt lower, 'flu decline is chiefly on beef and mixed tallow of good colour.
HIGH COMMISSIONER'S' REPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 25. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 23rd May : The mutton market is quiet. There :s a scarcity of prime quality mutton, especially Canterbury, with limited demand for poorer grades. Canterbury brands are quoted at 4Jd, and North Island at 3§d per lb. The lamb market is steady, with a limited demand. Large shipments are arriving from New Zealand. Canterbury lamb is quoted at 5Ad per lb, and other than Canterbury at 5Jd per lb. The beef market is dull, and prices are irregular, owing to competition tif good quality Argentine. New Zealand hind-quarters are quoted at and fore-quarters at 3d per lb. The butler market is quiet, but moderate business is doing. Choicest Naw Zealand butter is quoted at 110s; Danish, Ills; Australian, 1033; ani Syrian, 100j p:r cwt. The cheese market ia steady. New Z island white makes are quoted at tiJj, and coloured, which is in large sanply,• at 57s par cwt. Canadian, navv season's make, is quoted at s?' per cwt. ' The hemp market is quiet, with s:Tiall business doing. Following are current quotations:—Good fair grade,, on the spot, £25 15s pjr ton; fair grade, on the spot, £24 10s per ton; iair current Manila, on the spot, £24 10s per ton; May to July shipments, good fair grade, £26 per ton; fair grade, £2l 10-) per ton; fair current Manila, £24 10d per ton. The cocksfoot market is steady at last quotations. The wool market is advancing steuclilj for medium and coarse crossbreds of all grades, which now show a 5J premium over the closing rates at last sale; merinos are firm.
