MAURICEVILLE NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent). With the exception of sweated Government officials and our worthy pubilcan, practically all residents of Mauriccville and surrounding districts, journeyed to Masterton last Saturday to witness the opening match in the tour of the Anglo-Welsh football team. Needless to say they were ail disappointed with the game and result. It was annoying, to say the least, to see the Wairarapa-Bush representatives give such an allround poor exhibition. It is a matter of rsgret that sport appears to be a thing of the past here. I understand that there is no likelihood of our local football club appearing Miis season. It is mentioned that the local cricketers intend giving a ball at an early date to wind-up the past season, just as a grand finale, in which they will endeavour to impress those present, that they ki:ow more about tripping the "light fantastic toe" than they do of keeping up their stumps. A great deal of inconvenience has been experienced here lately through the Postal Department not making a delivery of telegrams. Before the Department saw fit to withdraw the cadet from the station the postmaster courteously delivered telegrams of any importance and within easy distance, although not called on to do so by the Department. Since the cadet has been withdrawn this practise has had to be abolished entirely. It is pleasing to note that residents are looking at their grievance in the right light, and ate petitioning the PostmasterGeneral for the appointment of a duly authorised messenger. No doubt their request will be acceded to. The appointment would certainly be an acquisition both to the office and the public generally. Residents will be pleased to note that Mr Blackinson, our local stationmaster, who has been laid aside for the past week with influenza, is now making a speedy progress towards recovery. His medical adviser, however, insists on rest and change. On Friday last a social and dance, in aid of the piano fund, was held in the Mauriceville West Schoolroom. The function was attended with every success, and the funds were considerably augmented. Local talent contributed songs, etc., and dancing was indulged in until the early hours. i The ladies supplied a sumptuous t,upper, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. It is anticipated that ere the season is over the piano "'ill be paid for, and a few pounds in hand for some other worthy object. What has happened to the Mauriceville Social Club? Last season, they prseented several enjoyable prci grammes, and it is to be hoped that th ;y have not disbanded. I wonder if the secretary knows anything about it? Perhaps they intend to startle us with something striking and original. Let us hope so. The Rev. Kitcat, of Eketahuna, conducted a Church of England service here last Sunday mornirg. ' The local school children are now enjoying a fortnight's holiday, it being the winter vacation.
