The Dunedin correspondent of the "Evening Post" states that Mrs Jane Baikie, arrested in Sydney for poisoning Alexander Brown, is believed to be a former resident of Otago, who gained considerable notoriety a few years ago. It is a perfectly reasonable request that when the North Island Trunk Railway is completed, as it will be at the end of the current year, the South Isiand Trunk Railway should be placed at the head of the Government's construction programme, says the "Lyttelton Time 3." There is net an argument which has been used by the advocates of the north line that cannot be employed by the friends of the south line. One is a3 truly a national work as the other is, and it would be hard to say which is likely to be the more prof.table. We have on previous occasions, snys a Christchurch paper, pointed out that, apart from the menac<jj of the settlers in the neighbourhood, it is very undesirable that dangerous or hardened criminals 3hould be sent to the prison camps, owing to the ease with which it is possible for them to corrupt the younger prisoners who are only on the threshold of a criminal career. There is no doubt that the prison camps are an excellent institution if properly managed. They ought to be reserved however, mainly for first offenders, excluding those who have been repeatedly convicted,- especially those who are being punished for such offences as burglary and crimes of violence.
