DECADANCE OF THE EMPIRE.
■»- CARDINAL LOGUE'S STATEMENT. "A GROSS SLANDER." Received May 26, 12.30 a.m. \ SYDNEY, May 25] Sir Harry Rawson, Governor of -,New South Wales, speaking at the Empire Day celebrations, characterised Cardinal Logue's statement in regard to the decadence of the Empire as a gross slander. He could -only hope that the Cardinal had been .misquoted or misled. He had travelled the greater part of New South Wales, and seen demonstrations, of loyalty. The remarks attributed to Cardinal Logue by a New York interviewer are as follow:—"The colonies are restive. Australia to-day is practically independent, and the trend ■ every moment is more and more in the direction of absolute rebellion. New Zealand is indifferent. Canada "is legislating in a manner showing ;her desire to conduct her business "in her own way. The fires of rebellion have been lighted in India, and men and women have been i hanged for daring to advocate the doctrine of never-dying freedom. When England sits alone, the result . of mis-government, it will be her day of reckoning for her treatment of the children of Ireland."
