A cable has been received from.Fiji stating that the Government has called for tenders for a subsidised direct fortnightly steam service with Melbourne. NEW CABLES TO TASMANIA. The Postmaster-General has. decided to accept the tender of Siemens Brothers for the construction and laying of two new cables to Tasmania, for .£49,000. THE SYDNEY MYSTERY. Received May 26, 12.'.30 a.m. SYDNEY, May 25. The inquest concerning the death of Alex. Brown, a wharf labourer, was continued to-day. The nurse at the hospital stated that Jane Baikie, who has been arrested on suspicion of having caused Brown's death, asked -Brown if anything happened to him would he give her his belongings. Brown answered "Yes." Baikie brought the deceased cake and fruit. The detective who arrested the woman, said that Baikie made a statement to him in which she alleged Brown made a will leaving her everything. Baikie said that she told the deceased,that she had bought strychnine to poison some cats with, but on learning this Brown had told her that it was dangerous to have it about the hous", and he threw it in the fire. She admitted pawning Brown's rings after his death. A SHIP SPRUNG A-LEAK. Keceived May 26, 12.30 a.m. SYDNEY, May L 5. The American ship Keuce, which was a week out from Newcastle to 'Frisco, has put in at Sydney. She sprang a leak in a hurricane, and re turned with over five feet of water in hsr hold.
