OPAKI DISTRICT SCHOOL.
ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. The annual picnic, sports, and distribution of prizes in connection with the Opaki School, was held yesterday on the property of Messrs J. and A. Welch. The spot selected for the picnic, which was surrounded with native bushes of all description, was all that could be desired. On that ideal picnic ground the pupils of the Opaki school; together with the members of the School Committee, and the residents of Opaki assembled yesterday forenoon, when a number of games were indulged in, and also several running events arranged for the amusement of the school children. The Committee had secured a quantity of toys flild useful articles which were presented apprizes to the successful competitors* in ! tho different tuning events. Prior to the termination 6? i?liC gathering, the Chairman (Mt' i. Welch) addressed those present. Such, gatherings, he said, were always looked forward to by the children, and acted as an incentive for them to work well at their studies during the year. He did not, however, think that the residents took the interest in school affairs that they should. They had, certainly, come forward and subscribed liberally towards the prize fund, thus enabling the children to have prizes presented to them. What he would like to emphasise was that at the annual meeting of householders too much apathy was shown, and he would like to see that remedied. There was no honour in being the Chairman of thd'Committtee, or a Committeeman, wh a n they elected themselves, and ho desired the residents to attend in full force when the next annual meeting came round, and if they approved of the Committee's administration he and his colleagues would indeed feel it a great honour if they were rp-elected.
Mr Welch then called upon Mrs Welch to distribute the prizes, which were received by the following pupils: Highest attendance (Mrs Ramsden's prize), Vernon Welch; highest attendance (long distance to walk), Chas. Hanson; best pass (Mr Preston's prize), Rose Henson; writing, upper division (Mrs Bourke's prize), Vernon Welch; writing, lower division, Lulu Cotter: arithmetic, upper division, Rose Henson; arithemetic, lower division, Eric Piatt; spelling, upper division, Stella McLachlan; spelling, lower division, Vincent Buick; brush drawing, upper division, Vernon Welch; brush drawing, lower division Owen Welch; year's work (teacher's prize), Bourton Bannister; year's work, lower division, Dorothy Bourke; improvement (Mrs Mowbray's prize), Alice Buick; improvement, Dorothy Mowbray; improvement, William Mobray; sewing (Mrs Cameron's prize), Stella McLachlan; sewing, lower division, Dorothy Bourke.
