Mr Deakin, Federal Prime Minister, has invited the Imperial Government to have special representation of the British fleet at the welcome to the American fleet. THE FEDERAL POST OFFICE. It is understood that the report of the Federal Post Office Commission recommends the separation of the telephone services of each State from general postal work. It is also recommended that telephone officers shall be responsible to deputy postmasters alone. The question of removing the whole department from political control is receiving attention. A BY-ELECTION. Received May 20, 10.30 p.m. SYDNEY May 20. The election to fill the vacancy in the St. George electorate, caused by Mr J. Carruthers' visit to England, resulted in the return of Mr Taylor (Ministerialist), who was elected by a large majority over the Labour candidate. WRECKAGE FOUND. Received May 21, 1 a.m. HOBART, May 20.
A quantity of wreckage, supposed to belong to the missing steamer Orion, has been found on Barrier Island. There is no trace of passengers.
