A QUESTION FOR RATEPAYERS.
The action of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association in deciding to accept from the Borough Council the sum of £7,000 for their Showgrounds, the grandstands ai:ci conveniences, must be commended. It is quita possible that the Association could realise more for the property mentioned if they were anxious to dispose of it in a different way, but we have good authority for expressing the opinion that it is the wish of tha Association that Masterton should acquire the grounds in question at a reasonable figure. The Association does not desire to drive a hard bargain, and we think tha price that they have named is evidence of the contention. The Showgrounds consist of 33i acres, and the price, including the grandstands, works out, roughly, at £2lO per acre. Last night the Borough Council decided to submit the question of purchase to the ratepayers, and no doubt the proposition will De very fully discussed before a poll of the ratepayers is taken. We feel sure that a thoroughly sound financial scheme can be submitted to the ratepayers, and the onus of preparing it and placing it before the ratepayers in a comprehensive light rests upon the Mayor and Council.
