THE BRAYBROOK RAILWAY DISASTER. Received May 18, 11.50 p.m. MELBOURNE, May 18. The inquest was resumed to-day on the victims of the Braybrook railway disaster. The guard of the Ballarat train deposed that when he saw the Bendigo train approaching he signalled his train to go forward quickly, but it was then too late. He had often found the distant signal at danger when the train passed in, and the home signal down. Kendall, the stationmaster at Braybrook, said in his evidence that he intended to give the signal "Come to distance," to the Bendigo train, but according to an entry in his book he gave the line clear to Sydenham. The mistake he had made was in keeping the Ballarat train at the home signal when he gave the line clear, but ho was under the impression that he had given the signal to the Bendigo train "Come to the distance." He had been working ten hours on the day of the accident, but that was nothing unusual. He had to look after both signals and the platform. Another witness said he saw sparks fly from the brakes of the Bendigo train at the home signal. The train slowed rapidly, and with thirty yards more of a clear road there would have been no accident.
