Spe iking at a reception accorded to him, Mr Morgan, the Commissioner of She Manufacturers' Association, who is vjsttjng the Oommonwealth to enquire into the state of trade, attributed the drift of trade into a''foreign channel largely to the existence of a shipping ring; which included all the regular steamship companies doing business between Australia and Britain. .' n " , , • This ring, Mr Morgan declared, had hold of the whole import trade of Australia, and it was absolutely impossible for any other shipping company to enter the trade, or to promote healthy competition. The whole trade was tied up by the ring system of deferred rebates.
