The defendant pleaded guilty.' Chief-Detettive stated ■ that the defendant had sold to Con- ; stable Willatts (in plain clothes at the time) two tickets in a sweep on the Wanganui Steeplechase, to he run oh the :23rd .May. Twenty-five thousand subscribers at 2s each weie •■ supposed to enter for the sweep, the j first prize to be £750, the second £3OO, the third £IOO, and the others ■iti divide £2OO. The defendant charged 2s 3d for eadh .ticket,, reserving 3d for himself -as commission. , It was i known that the tickets were oeing . sold thrughout the .dominion. Mr Wilford, on behalf of the accused, stated that the offence had been practically created since 1906, before which tickets had been sold .openly for that kind of thing. The accused bore an irreproachable char- . acter, and apparently did not know that he was breaking the law. Only ..about fifteen tickets in all had been sold at Petone. The money had been .returned to the purchassrs since. _ - His Worship entered a conviction ~and fined the accused £2 and 7s costs. Percy Simpson, assistant to the previous accused, pleaded guilty to a i4|milar charge, and was fined £1 and John Turner, tobadconist, also pleaded guilty to a similar charge, . and was fined £2 and costs 7s. Ivan Black, tobacconist, Newtown, was charged with organising a lottery in co:-.nection with the Wanganui Steeplechase meeting. On the \ application of Mr Herdman, a remand was granted to Wednesday next, the 20th instant. Bail was allowed in the sum of £SO, and ione surety of £SO. On a similar charge at another • date, the defendant wa3 ordered tti pay court costs, 7s.
