HUGHES SHIELD,
GLENGARRY v. KIA TOA.
A match was played on the Showgrounds yesterday between the Kia Toa (Greytown) and Glengarry Clubs. The weather was fine, and a fast and interesting game was witnessed. Kia Toa playing with the sun in their faces in the first spell repeatedly placed Glengarry on the defensive, but Misses Gordon, E. Miller, D. Millar, Crichton and E. Devonport cleared the line in good style. Not to be denied, however, Kia Toa attacked again, and determined play on the visitors' part resulted in Miss E. Humphries scoring a goal. This was the only score during the spell.
On resuming p'ay was fairly even for a time. Led by Misses Logan and E. Devonport, the Glengarry forwards swept down the field, and a score looked probable, but Misses Keedwell and Beard drove them back. Kia Toa then attacked. Determined play by Misses E. Miller, F. Miller, Gordon, J. Evans and A. Devonport, prevented a sr.ore being registered for some time, but clean hitting and passing resulted in Kia Toa putting on three goals in fairly quick succession. After this Glengarry rallied, and Misses R. Evans, Lett, Gordon, and E. Devonport were conspicuous for their good play. Play centred for some time, and then Kia Toa attacked again, but the good defensive play of Glengarry prevented any further score, and the game ended, Kia Toa 4 goals, Glengarry nil. Mr B. Iveson was referee.
GARRY OWEN v. HIGH SCHOOL. The District High School and Gary Owen teams met on the schoolgrounds yesterday. A keenly contested game was witnessed, and there were some flashes of brilliant play. McKenzie scored for the school, and Miss K. O'Leary for Garry Owen. For the latter team Misses O'Leary, O'Toole, Frot, Coyle and Duggan put in some capital work. Miss M. McKenzie was the pick, of a good lot of School forwards. Of an even set of backs, Miss Ivy McKenize was noticeable for her brilliant defensive work. Mr Olds was referee. HUIA, v. HINEMOA.
