GAMBLING SCANDAL IN NEW YORK.

An illegal gambling saloon estab3ished as a trap six weeks ago in the "tenderloin" district by Commissioner Bingham, chief of the New York police, and Mr Travers Jerome, the District Attorney, in conjunction with the "World" newspaper has brought about startling disclosures suggestive of the manner in which palice officers suc:eed in amassing fortunes.

For months Commissioner Bingham has been bewailing the fact that he 13 powerless to fight crime in New York owing to the alliance of his own subordinates with criminals and gambling saloon proprietors. The "World" approached him with a scheme for running a real saloon with tha object of detecting the officers, who grant protection to such haunts in return for a liberal portion of the winnings. The result exceeded all anticipations. Through agents who pretended to be proprietors of the den, Commissioner Bingham, Mr Jerome and the "World" agreed to pay £2O week ly for protection. In this way the saloon enjoyed immunity for six weeks.

Now Commissioner Bingham is holding an inquisition among the police officers, many of whom will be dismissed the service, while others, including the captain of the district in which the saloon is situated, will be reduced in rank.
