English papers to hand report the death at Beaulieu, on March 24th, of Major Arthur Griffiths, soldier, novelist, and criminologist. Major Griffiths wrote his first article at the age of nine, and saw active service at sixteen, when he joined the 63rd Regiment in the Crimea, where he witnessed the fall of Sebastopol. His next step was the acceptance of a post at Gibraltar, where by pure chance he became editor of the local "Chronicle," a semiofficial publication. Subsequently he wrote for the "Globe," the "World," "Vanity Fair," and many other papers, and acted for a period as editor of the "Fortnightly Review." Appointed deputy-governor of Chatham, Millbank, and Wormwood Scrubs prisons, he became one of the most able students of crime and criminals. The experience gained at these places, and as inspector of prisons from 1878 to 1890, provided him with the mateAd for numerous breezy novels full of-'exciting incident and attractive in style.
