THE HOP INDUSTRY.

DISCUSSION IN THE HOUSE OF

LORDS,

A. MOTION ADOPTED

Received May 12, 9.55 p.m. LONDON, May 12. The House of Lords adopted Lord Aldington's motion "that the critical condition of the Kentish hop industry deserved the Government's immediate attention." The Earl of Carrington admitted that the situation was very serious. The Government were deeply sympathetic, but were unable to entertain a duty on foreign hops. Lord Harris insisted that the hop industry must be ruined unless the Government intervened.

The Marquis of Lansdowne agreed that it was desirable to await the report of the Hop Committee, but insisted that foreign competition was the main cause of the trouble.
