One wonders how many surviving men and women can claim to be "the originals" of Dickens' characters. A member of that notable little band passed away recently m the person of William Miles, ex-verger of Kochcstcr Cathedral, who was no other than the "Mr Topo" of "The Mystery of Ed win Drood." Miles was born in 181G, and joined the cathedral staff at the age of nine. He was successively chorister, lay clerk, under-verger and verger, his connection with the cathedral last-
ing throughout seventy-five years. At its cessation he became a pensioner of the Dean and Chapter. Thirteen children decked Mr Miles quiver.
