MR ASQUITH'S BUDGET. A MIXED KECEPTION. LONDON, May 8. "The Times" remarks that the Budget marks an epoch in National policy, and declares that Mr Asquith is reckless and improvident in disposing of the whole surplus, in face of the admitted requirements for larger ship-building to keep pace with the development of the German Navy. The "Daily Mail" emphasises ' the mortality returns, and says the workers are unlikely to be satisfied. The "Mail" adds that tho scheme cannot be final. The future is heavily mortgaged, and tariff reform alone will enable the country to discharge its obligation. The "Standard" says the Budget seals the doom of freetrade. The "Morning Post" says freetrade has played its part and must leave the stage. The "Daily Telegraph" describes Mr Asquith's statement as the most reckless Budget of modem times. The "Daily Chronicle" says it is a great budget, and strikes the keynote of vsound finance and social reform.
The "Dally News" says Mr Asquith has cleared and ploughed (he rough giound. and it will be Mr Lloyd George's tatk to draw from the rtaiy furrows a full harvest of reforms. It adds that a rapid expansion of pensions will be possible from a super-tax on large unearned incomes and the taxation of site values. CRIMES ACT REPEAL BILL. Received May 10, 4.8 p.m. LONDON, May 9. In the House of Commons, Mr E. H. Burke's Bill to repeal the Crimes Act of 1887 was read a second time by 201 votes to 77, and was referred to a committee. The Bill is not expected to pass.
