Captain A. H. Herbert, of the Eketahuna Mounted Rifles, has been placed on the active unattached list with his former rank.

The death'occurred, yesterday, at 'Waipukurau, of an old Hawke's Bay sittler, Mr John Merrylees. The deceased saw active service in connection with the pursuit of Te Kooti. Mr Thomas Mackay, a Napier ■ cmtenarian, celebrated his 103 rd , birthday on Thursday. Mr Mackay, ■'" who rn'ay fairly claim to be about the oldest man in the dominion, came to New Zealand in the Duchess of • Arygllin 1810, and still retains a good grip of the physical powers, which have carried him tu such a ripe age. He enjoys a walk around his garden, and occasionally indulges In a pame of draughts. His descend;ants include a number of great grandchildren.

Mri Breen, widow of the late Mr A J Breen, of Reefton, and im'ither of Mrs Frank Buick, of Masterton, died in the Masterton Hospital last night after a rather sudden illness. Deceased was staying a few weeks in Masterton before returning home. She took ill about a : fortnight ago, and was admitted to the Hospital, where she gradually sank. The deceased was &7 years of age, and was a native of Tipperary, Ireland. She had resided on the West Coast of the South Island since comir." to New Zealand, about thirty years ago. Deceased leaves four chi!.•dren.
