Dr J. Wallace, of Featherston, who went there fifty years ago, celebrated his eightieth birthday on Friday. The • Rev. L. Thompson, M.A., of Carterton, who has been on tended visit to the Suuth IslaSi-, returned to Carterton on Saturday. Mr H. W. King, the newly appointed secondary at the Greytown District High School, has commenced his duties.
Miss Derry, matron of the Greytown Hospital is at present on her annual holiday, and is being relieved by Nurse Hayward, of Wellington. The Rev. J. J. Pendray, the newly appointed. Methodint minister at Eketahuna, was on Thursday evening tendered a welcome social by the members of the church.
On Thursday evening the residents, of Nireaha tendered a farewell social to Miss Smith, teacher at the Nireaha School, who is leaving the district. Miss Smith was the recipient of a handsome dressing case from the residents of the district made during".... the evening by Mr Dowden on their behalf. The children of the school made Miss Smith a presentation on Thursday afternoon of a pair of salt cellars and a silver sugar basin. Guard A. Hart, a popular official attached to the Masterton railwaystaff, who has been promoted co Wellington, was entertained at a social evening by the staff and friends on Saturday evening} Mr Shinnich occupied the chair, the evening being devoted to toasts, songs, etc. Mr C. F. Hill, stationmaster, presaged Guard Hart with a purse of sovereigns from his comrades and friends, as a token of the esteem in which he was held. The presentation was followed by'cheers for the recipient. A wedding of interest to Fernridge and. Upper Plain residents took place on Wednesday last, when Mr Roderick McKenzie, son of Mr Roderick McKenzie, senr., a well-known old Fernridge settlor, was married to Miss Mary ("Bay") McKenzie,youngest daughter of Mr Archibald McKenzie, of Yarrawonga, Victoria. The bridssmaid was Miss E. McKenzie, sister of the bridegroom, the bride being given away by her brother, Mr R. McKenzie, of Weber, Mr J. McKenzie. brother of the bridegroom, acting as best man. The Rev. A. T. Thompson performed the ceremony, which was followed by a reception at the homestead at Fernridge. The honeymoon is being spent in Wellington. Mr A. McLeod, a well-known Masterton sawmiller and farmer, who leaves on a tour of England and America this week, sented by about thirty friends, ly members of the Masterton A. and P. Association, with a travelling bag suitably engraved, the function taking place at the A. and P. rooms on Saturday afternoon. Mr G. Heron made the presentation. Mr J. lorns made a very interesting speech, eulogising the recipient's busin«s abilities and social qualities. Messrs J. H. Pauling and W. L. Falconer also made brief speeches, wishing Mr McLeod a pleasant tour. Mr McLeod, in reply, said he was pleased that his thirty years' residence had secured for him such a number of warm friends. Mr McLeod was also handed a lettar of introduction to various sporting clubs at Home from the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. T.ie gathering concluded with cheers for the recipient.
