WELLINGTON RACES
BY TELEGRAPH—PRESB ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON. April 29. The weather was dull and threatening for the autumn meeting. The attendance was not so large- as in previous years, but, no doubt, it was aifected by the Mayoralty election. There wa3 a splendid day's sport. The Thompson Handicap was an exceptionally fine race. The sum of £11,464 was put through the totaiisator, "as against £12,842 (which included the douule machine) last year. Thirteen bookmakers were licensed at £2O 10s and twenty-one at £lO 10s for inside and .outside respectively, including clerks' fees. Results:— Hurdle Race.—Aorangi, 9.11, 1; Repulse, 9.0, 2; Te Kainui, 9.3, 3. Also ran—Playmate 10.4. Aorangi practically led from the start and won very easily by six lengths, Te Kainui a poor third. Time, 3min 24 2-ssec. Waiwetu Handicap.—Toa Tuhi, 7.2, 1; Gazeley, 7.13, 2; Clanchattan, 7.8, 3. Also ran—Waipaku, Probability, All Guns. Kurawaka and Moata. From a good start Toa Tuhi and Clanchattan were in front, but in the straight the latter gave place to Gazeley, but Toa Tuhi held his own to the finish, winning by a length and a quarter. Time, lmin 32 4-ssec. Silverstream Hack Race.—Wailethe, 8.10, 1; Wharekura, 7.8, 2; North Pole, 8.4, 3. Also ran—The Libyan and Osiris. The latter fell after going three furlongs. Wharekura led to the turn, where Wailethe took charge and won fairly easy by half a lenjth. Time, lmin 33sec. THOMPSON HANDICAP. Sunbonnet, 7.2 t Sea King, 6.11 t Aboriginal, 6.7 3 All the final acceptors, except Crops Battery, started. Gold Crest led for a couple of furlongs, then Sea King took charge, and in the straight Sunbonnet joined in the issue, Gold Crest falling away. A desperate finish resulted in a dead heat, Aboriginal, who came with a late run, being a length and a half away. Time, lmin 43 4-ssec. North Island Challenge Stakes.— Diab010,.6.13, 1; Glenculloch, 8.8, 2; Carissima, 9.1, 3. Also ran—Husbandman and Formative. Glenculloch led to the straight, where Diabolo came with a wet sail and won easily by four lengths. Time, lminT32sec. Plunket Nursery Handicap. —Flitaway, 9.2, 1; Artillerie, 8 10, 2; Roosevelt, 7.0, 3. Only starters. Won very easily by half a length. Time, lmin 4 3-ssec. Railway Handicap.—Motoa, 8.5, 1; Truganini 6.10, 2; Cros3 Battery, 8.0, 3. Also ran— Ballarat and Martyrium. Martyrium and Truganini led for the first two or three furlongs, when the former died away and Motoa tackled the latter. A good finish resulted in a head victory, Cross Battery two or three lengths away. Time, lmin 17 l-ssec. Tinakori Hack Handicap.—Sir Frisco, 8.4, 1; Penates, 8.11. 2; Yosami, 7.11, 3. Also ran—Mon Ami, Bluebell and Blue Ribbon. Sir Frisco came away in the straight, and won easily by two lengths. Time, lmin 18 2-ssec.
