CHARITABLE AID.
SOME SURPRISING CASES. WELLINGTON, April 28. Miass Kirk made a report to-day to the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board on investigations made throughout the district into the circumstances of people in receipt of assistance. Some of the cases are surprising. F")r example, in the country a married man with foqr children is alleged to be extravagant, one girl getting rolled-gold spectacles, and a boy a bicycle, costing £4, to deliver papers. The rent is paid and they are allowed rations. A recommendation was made that the rent be struck off. Wellington suburb: A woman with three children has a weekly income of £2 Bs. "This case," remarks Miss Kirk, "is rather unusual, because in addition to the income mentioned, the recipient is receiving £2 10s interest a quarter on a sum left by her husband, which will give the children £6O or £7O a year when they are of age. A recommendation was made that the grant be reduced from 10s to ss. Wellington suburb: The house in which the recipients live is their own, worth £BO, subject to a small mortgage. A recommendation was made that the grant of 10s a week should cease. Country recipients: There is a son, aged 22, another married, three girls at work, the property is free from debt, and they are receiving 10s a week. They have had 2261bs sugar and 1751bs flour in three months, and don't make their own bread. A recommendation was made that the grant should cease. Wellington suburb: A recipient, with four children, derives from boarders an income of £7 4s a week. A recommendation that for the present the rent grant of 5s a week cease was made.
