THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. MONDAY, APRIL 27, 1908. THE BOROUGH COUNCIL VACANCY.
At the same time as the election for Mayor on Wednesday next the ratepayers of Masterton will be called upon to elect a councillor to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr. Temple. Two candidates have come forward, Messrs E. McEvven and J. Hunter, and it is for the ratepayers to appoint the one they deem will serve their interests best. In Mr McEwen we have a candidate who has a thorough grasp of the requirements of the town, and who, moreover, up till twelve months ago had occupied a seat among the councillors for many years. Last year, it will be remembered, he was an aspirant for Mayoral honours, and his defeat at the hands of Mr Uoradine by a small majority deprived the Borough of the services of an able councillor. Had he contested for a place among the councillors at that time instead, there is little doubt that his name would have been high up in the list of successful candidates. His opponent, Mr Hunter, is at a disadvantage in not having been a resident of the
town for so long a period. At the same time he has sat at the Council table in other places, and on Friday night he delivered an address in the Town Hall, when his views were clearly set forth and listened to with great interest. In financial matters the speaker shuwed ability, especially in his criticism of the figures submitted by thi Mayor in his recent speech. Mr Hunter, also, favoured the retaining of the profits of the Gasworks for the improvement of the plant, and his remarks on Mr LaingMeason's water and drainage report showed a careful study of the position of affairs. ,
